We love Mad Men !
The drama series Mad Men, about an ad agency in New York in the early 1960's, has captured the imagination of the fashion industry. And we are no exception. We just love the styles because they are so absolutely feminine and look fabulous on girls with curves.
The three key ladies in the drama are Peggy, Joan and Betty (pictured above) and each has their own style. So, inspired by these gorgeous girls we have come up with our own Mad Men collection.
First, one for Peggy, the sweet practical girl with hidden depths, a chic black crepe dress with Thai silk check collar trim and buttons with an empire waist. I just love this - one of my personal favourites.
Then a super-sassy dress for the voluptuous and fiery red head, Joan . This magenta peplum dress will make you look all woman and is perfect to give balance to wide shoulders. You could also make this style as a top and skirt if you prefer to give added versatility. We have given it a modern edge with the silver zip detail.
Betty is a neurotic cigarette puffing housewife - blonde and always so pretty in pastels so we have designed her a sweet day dress in pale blue and white polka dots that will be perfect for so many casual to semi-formal occasions. Great for casual Fridays too.
And we just couldn't resist copying Peggy's little floral chiffon dress. But this time in a white opel silk chiffon with pale pink cherry blossom. To keep the look fresh and not too sugary, we have lined it with a mint green - pretty as a picture. To take the chiffon look from day to night we have used a black and red version of the same fabric as a layer over a black satin crepe. The skirt opens in the front to give movement.
The next dress is a great style for both curvy and straight girls. This is another crepe dress, this time with a silk sash feature at the waist.
Our final dress is a classic straight cut in gorgeous pink cut out lace lined with a silver blue Thai silk. I can just see Betty at a cocktail party in this one.
Lace is such a feminine fabric and this Normandy lace with rich red poppies is just perfect to embellish a simple Thai silk top that will work for you in so many different ways as you can see it here teamed with a simple pencil skirt, full silk skirt and black cigarette three quarter length pants.
Our final outfit is one that will give even the straightest girl those wonderful Mad Man curves. Long flared pants made of a soft silk satin that has a stunning bubbles border print in black and champagne. Team with a black Thai silk bustier for a glamorous, sexy look.
Washable fabrics in lots of great versatile designs
In a climate like Singapore, it is good to be able to have wardrobe items that are washable. We thought we would put together two capsule ideas containing only washable items and also showcasing some of our new fabrics.
The first one is the perennial favourite colour way - black based. The foundation pieces for this capsule are a black stretch cotton pencil skirt and simple jacket. The pants are washable crepe.
The two dresses are both new fabrics in stock – a fabulous black and white zebra print stretch cotton and a cute large black and white polka dot with reverse smaller dot trim. This fabric comes in lots of great colours too so you can take advantage of the spots and circles trend. Both dresses are very versatile – wear with or without the jacket for work or play.
The butterfly tunic top is made of a beautifully soft washable polyester chiffon – black with random spots in white and shades of grey, worn here over a little camisole top. This works so well with pants and dresses up and down very easily. This is a great piece to travel with. Weighs virtually nothing, it won’t crush and you can wash and dry it very easily. We used a poly chiffon for the little shell top as well – this time a pink tinged soft animal print – again a really wearable piece.
We included two of our most popular designs that are also washable – the mandarin collar blouse in satin back crepe – we did it here in an elegant winter white but it is available in lots of gorgeous colours. And the wrap shirt in stretch cotton – also available in lots of great new colours including this aqua blue.
And last but not least a little shell top in a red stretch cotton with pink rosebud print.
But it doesn’t only have to be black! A lovely rich burgundy colour stretch cotton jacket and skirt make the foundation of our other capsule. In fact all of the pieces in this capsule are made in various types of cotton – stretch and non-stretch.
Inspired by three first ladies of style
This month our Inspiration article interprets the styles of three fabulous but very different women to inspire you with some super chic and wearable outfits.
Celebrities have an increasingly strong influence on fashion trends so we thought we would look at the style of Michelle Obama and - Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly.
All three of these ladies have become style icons and always (well nearly always) dressing to make the most of their assets.
Our cocktail dresses were inspired by one of Michelle Obama's many magazine cover outfits, her love of bright colours and the feminine elegance of Grace Kelly.
The day dresses are inspired by Michelle and Grace.
Coat and dress combinations and feminine suits, both favourites of both Jackie Kennedy and Michelle Obama were the inspiration for our last three outfits.

Cool cotton designs
Our new featured designs have been inspired by the delivery of some fabulous new cottons. Cotton comes in so many guises and we have a great new selection for you.
First we have some great new stretch cottons, perfect for our ever popular sundress, tops and skirts.
The abstract floral on the left comes in three colour ways; red, purple and green. The pretty feminine floral in soft muted colours comes in two colour ways and the multi coloured splash print also comes in three stunning colour ways.
Wear the sundress with a black cropped stretch cotton jacket to turn a fun sundress for sightseeing on vacation into a funky outfit for Friday.
Then we have a beautiful floral jacquard cotton voile in three gorgeous colour ways – black with bright multi colour, dark brown with muted pastels and a biscuit base with warm earth tones. All of the colours will make it so simple to accessorize the garments you make with it and to match with other items in your wardrobe.
This fabric is just perfect for dresses and skirts, like the ones we have here. We just love all three of these designs – the shift with the shorter lining shows the semi sheer fabric off to perfection. The flippy dress is another simple yet effective design with the fabric being very much the hero. I think my favourite outfit is the black multi colour skirt teamed with a simple black top. This skirt would become a solid favourite in anyone’s wardrobe – cool and comfortable as well as versatile. Make it short and cute, knee length chic or long and elegant. Just choose the colour-way to mix and match with your existing wardrobe.
Dress to Chic Perfection
One of the great things about having your clothes tailored is that you can get a dress that will fit you perfectly. Even if you, like me, have a body that is nothing like a rack size (more like three). And these days the likes of Roland Mouret and Victoria Beckham have made the dress sexy again. The power suit is now the power dress and we have some sassy designs at Cayen that will get you doing a serious strut into that important meeting.
Style your dresses by wearing them alone or under a jacket, ring the changes with belts, jewellery, bags and shoes. Take a simple sleeveless shift to a cold climate and layer by wearing a turtleneck under it, and finish the look with opaque tights and boots.
So our fabulous five are, left to right :-
A lightweight magenta wool looks fabulous in this sharp but flirty dress. The neckline is so flattering for many body shapes and the vertical pleats at the hemline give a distinct feature that helps to elongate the legs and draw attention to those shapely pins.
This biscuit/camel colour is in nearly every collection this season, from Michael Kors to Max Mara. We have used a crepe in a flattering false wrap design to create this beautiful elegant dress. The black vertical piping is another slimming feature. This dress is perfect for dressing up and down and will work in so many different colour combinations – navy and cream would look so chic.
It wouldn’t be possible to write about career wear dresses without including our current best seller – the black darted neckline crepe dress, pictured here with a black jacket it becomes your quintessential LBD.
The next one is great for you slim straight girls who are looking to emphasise or create curves. The drop waist and volume at the hip will draw attention down and give a super feminine shape (a little bit Mad Men we think too). We have illustrated it here in a grey textured lightweight wool to give it some gravitas. Wear it with a skinny belt to add even more curvy definition and change the look.
This red crepe dress’s classic boat neck will make the most of a smaller bust and the flippy hemline will add some soft drama, movement and femininity to an otherwise very simple dress design. It also has soft overlapping ‘petal’ sleeves. Great for belting and layering your longer necklaces.

Well suited- Cayen NEW suits for the chic business woman
At Cayen we make a lot of business wear and we like to make sure that we give our clients designs that are different from the run of the mill. So, we have come up with some new suit designs inspired by recent runways and classic elegance.
As always these outfits have been designed carefully to maximise the number of uses for each individual piece and give you a super low Price Per Wear.
From left to right :-
The jacket is made in a black and white fleck linen mix fabric, trimmed with black crepe to match the black crepe pants with sewn in crease. The three quarter length sleeves and fabric make this the perfect outfit when you need something smart but not too formal.
The next one is already a real winner for us. A winter white lightweight wool skirt suit with elegant collarless jacket and pleat detail skirt. Wearing this suit makes a real statement of confidence and is the one to wear to a board level meeting or big sales pitch.
The chocolate brown satin back crepe skirt suit is ultra feminine but sassy and smart. The jacket sleeves have a very slight bell and the waist belt and piping detail on jacket and skirt set it apart. the woman who wears this is confident in her femininity.
Stolen off the runway, we love the seasons big trend for nude and camel business wear. The sleek simple lines make this the pants suit for the quietly confident young woman who is comfortable with who she is and doesnt need to brag. Made in a soft non-crush crepe the wider length pants give this suit a very contemporary edge. Also great for most body shapes , including the taller and larger girls.
And last but certainly not least is a black crepe suit that we know will become a firm favourite with our customers. The false wrap skirt has a soft gather on the tummy panel which is very flattering. The assymetric design is continued in the jacket with a flattering diamond shape neckline with mandarin collar. Add feature satin buttons and collar detail and this jacket would also make a wonderful 'tux' evening jacket and look gorgeous with a pair of soft black crepe pants.
